Internship Dates – 8/13 (Total of 5 hours)
Every day that I am at the Community Food Bank, I am provided examples of the wide range of duties that a human service administrator is dealt. In preparing for an upcoming fundraising event, I was able to observe how a committee made up of staff, board members, and volunteers, comes together and works diligently to hold the best event that they can. The event being discussed is the seventh “Black Diamond Fundraiser” and looks to be the largest event that the Food Bank has held.
There are many differences in the group of planners on the committee, stemming from age and gender to economics and viewpoints, and this does prove problematic when planning an event like this. Some would like the event more open to the public; others are content with it being limited to a smaller number of attendees with a larger expected donation per person. I was encouraged to see many members disagree in a respectful manner, especially when ideas were shot down or pushed to the side. Not every idea is practical when planning an event and yet through taking the time and reflecting on how to make it better, this committee prioritizes making this fundraiser a truly special evening for all who will attend.
This week marks the end of my internship hours at the Community Food Bank of Citrus County. I cannot believe how fast the summer has gone by and I truly have enjoyed my experience working underneath the leadership of Executive Director John Autry, as well as with his staff. I have greatly appreciated this opportunity and I hope that others will be awarded the ability to take part in assisting this organization as they strive to impact those struggling with food insecurity throughout this area.
