Internship Dates – 7/26, 7/27 & 7/28 (Total of 12 hours)
While the Community Food Bank of Citrus County resources many different types of agencies across the county, there is still much that needs to be done in the field of building awareness. With this in mind and with the permission of my internship supervisor, I contacted Sean, one of our board members, who is the store manager of Winn-Dixie (grocery store) in Inverness. I asked him if it would be possible for me to have a table outside of the store to collect nonperishable items for the Food Bank, but also to give out information that will build awareness in the community. He said that it would not be a problem and stated that if we needed anything he would be willing to help.
I got to the Winn-Dixie at 9:15AM and checked in with Sean before setting up my table at the front of the store. He graciously allowed me to set up right at the front of the entrance, which gave me excellent visibility for all who were going to the store. I was able to collect three large boxes of food and financial donations as well for the Food Bank. What I appreciated the most though was the opportunity to be able to share firsthand with residents’ information about the Community Food Bank. Many residents were unaware of the work that is done throughout the community, while others has erroneous information that they had picked up from different sources.
I see the significance of this type of activity and I hope to see the Food Bank will take advantage of the opportunities that they have to build awareness and to correct misinformation. One clear example is through being willing to have a table at different stores from time to time. It is not feasible to be at every store frequently, but through prioritizing some, I can see a number of exciting outcomes including but not limited to increased financial and food donations, opportunities for volunteer signups, connecting with local residents, and building our visibility throughout the community.
