Internship Dates – 7/18 & 7/20 (Total of 5 hours)
As society continues to place more of an emphasis on social media, nonprofit organizations should definitely strive to take advantage of the opportunities that are provided from this technology. Social media platforms allow groups to create accounts from which they can advertise, solicit donations, and bring awareness to the work that they are doing. With this in mind, one of the tasks that I completed this week was in creating the Community Food Bank of Citrus County’s first Instagram account (@cfbocc).
I chose to create this because not only would this increase the online presence of the Food Bank, but it would also create content that could be shared across the other media platforms currently utilized. This would enable posts to be shared more regularly than what has been the case in the past. I have had a lot of experience in social media creation and maintenance at my previous positions as a minister and a teacher, which greatly assisted in getting this off the ground.
It’s understandable that some would not see this as a great idea, especially if this is not maintained after the internship. In sharing this with a friend, their response was that they did not believe it would carry on. It’s my hope to see this continue on and to be used by not only the Executive Director, but also by many of the staff as they go to different locations and events. We have already begun to see the fruits of this and I look forward to being able to see increased visibility from creating this Instagram account.
