Internship Dates – 6/11, 6/14, & 6/15 (Total of 8 hours)

This was a very different week at the Community Food Bank! This week we hosted a group from Arkansas who was involved with a local church’s “Mission Blitz.” Every year, the Gulf to Lake Church hosts youth groups from many different geographic areas here in Inverness and these groups participate in service projects throughout the community. The Food Bank was selected as one of these sites and I was privileged to host this group at different times, which falls under a very important part of administration at this organization. Volunteerism is an essential part of any non-profit organization, especially at the Food Bank, and I truly do not believe how they would be able to manage the food taken in and sent out weekly without regular volunteers.

In reflection on the subject of volunteers, I personally need to be more open to delegation and sharing applicable responsibilities with others. There are some responsibilities that cannot be delegated and must be fulfilled by the administrator, yet there are many others that can be. In doing so, time is freed up to focus on the most important tasks. I have recognized this in the past, but it has become more of a focus since beginning my courses here at Wilmington University. This has been a process for me, just like it is for many others, and I am committed to continue to improve in this area. Since I am not generally inclined toward this subject, I will intentionally remind myself regularly of this goal.

It was a stressful week in many ways and I am glad that despite the setbacks, I was able to speak with Mr. Autry about many subjects surrounding leadership, volunteers, and employees. I am learning a lot and much of it is directly applicable to where I am. I am really appreciative of all that I am learning at my internship placement and am excited for what the future will hold at the Community Food Bank of Citrus County!
